Weesakayjak Recreates the World
Weesakayjak had been asked by the Creator to show the other creatures how to live. Unfortunately, he
failed to do so, and soon everyone was fighting. The Creator asked many times for the creatures to
make peace with one another. He warned them many times, and when He saw that they weren’t listening,
He flooded the world. The only creatures to survive were Weesakayjak and three other animals: Otter,
Beaver, and Muskrat. The Creator told Weesakayjak that the world could be re-created from the materials
under the sea. Weesakayjak asked Otter to dive to the bottom of the sea, but he came back empty-handed.
Beaver, too, dove down and was unsuccessful. Finally, Weesakayjak asked Muskrat, the smallest of them
all and the least likely to succeed, to dive. Muskrat swam very hard to the bottom of the sea, and
when she resurfaced, she held a piece of earth in her paw. The earth contained pieces of wood and
bones. Weesakayjak took the earth from Muskrat’s paw, placed it into his hand, and blew on it. The
world was re-created, complete with plants and animals. In reward for her hard work, Weesakayjak
rewarded Muskrat with roots and rushes for her to live in.
