Lim Kwong Yew is better as Normie Kwong, the first Chinese Canadian to
play in the Canadian Football League (CFL) and the youngest player on a
Grey Cup Champion team, with the Calgary Stampeders. His CFL
career lasted thirteen years, winning three more Grey Cups with
the Edmonton Eskimos. He set many records and won many
awards, including Canadian Athlete of the Year in 1955.
Born in Calgary to parents who immigrated from Canton,
China, Lim Kwong Yew grew up during a time when the Chinese community in Alberta
struggled with the anti-Asian legislation that discriminated against them in
terms of property and citizenship rights. Mr. Kwong's
commitment to athletics and community affairs makes him an
important figure in the history of Alberta's Chinese
community.
