Grade Seven students from Griffiths-Scott Middle School in Millet, began their Reading the Community: Literacy Through Heritage Project with an initial tour of the Millet and District Museum. They were introduced to the story of Millet's past in seeing the artifacts and exhibits, drawing on the expertise of Millet museum interpreters like Jean Scott and Louise Reist. They also heard about the involvement of people from the district, such as Dallas Schmidt, in the Second World War.
Working with teachers Marilyn Macmillan and Charlene Saunders, each student then chose to do an in-depth study of an aspect of Millet's past, such as the history of a building or of people who had lived in the area. Using
Powerpoint presentations and other displays and exhibits, students gave presentations in class and in the community. Through this work, students improved their writing, speaking, research and analytical skills.
The Griffiths-Scott Middle School project concludes in September 2001 when the students make their final presentations for peers and parents.
