Armed Forces Radio

Edmonton's proximity to Alaska made it a prime candidate for one of CKUA's more intriguing production and broadcasting alignments. During the construction of the Alaska Highway in the late '40s and early '50s, Edmonton was home to American engineers and military personnel. CKUA was asked to become part of the American Armed Forces Network, and broadcast American network shows - with the commercials deleted, as CKUA was commercial free at that time.
