At-homes

In the early decades of the 1900's, before soap operas and television, an important part of the social circuit was the afternoon tea party or "at-home". Important women in the community would host at-homes usually once a month on weekends. Invited guests and other respectable women would drop by for a cup of tea and to socialize about important topics of the day. They might also exchange calling cards and discuss their husbands' business affairs. This is how women got important information and developed connections to advance their own or their husbands' interests. A lot of gossiping happened at these parties, just like at school! Guests would often attend several at-homes in a single afternoon.
