Instructional Plans

Rationale:

It is vital and obligatory that students are introduced to science from an Aboriginal perspective. The following lesson plans are designed to correlate with the existing elementary Science Curriculum while introducing aspects of Aboriginal culture, values, beliefs, and traditions into the mainstream. Students will be able to connect Aboriginal culture with existing knowledge in focused science based lessons and activities.

Introductory Activity:

It is important that students will be introduced to science from an Aboriginal perspective so it logical that they need to be introduced to some aspects of Aboriginal culture. To begin this simple, yet effective exercise, write the word Aboriginal or First Nations on the board. Ask students to identify things or objects that they ALREADY know regarding Aboriginal People. You may wish to create or list the student responses into categories. Some student responses may include buffalo, tipi, horses, a list of different spoken languages or Aboriginal cultures such as Cree, Blackfoot, etc. Make sure to guide the students through questioning to help them generate a fairly comprehensive list.
