Aboriginal Youth Identity Series: LeadershipElementarySeniors Leadership

Elementary Teacher Zone

Welcome to the Teacher Zone for the elementary portion of the Aboriginal Youth Identity - Leadership Edukit. The lessons in the elementary section are designed to compliment the 2005 Social Studies as outlined by Alberta Education. The focus on this series of lesson plans is on identifying Aboriginal role models and heroes such as Bill Reid, Buffy Sainte-Marie, or Waneek Horn. The lesson plans also allow students to discover how leadership roles operated within Aboriginal communities and how they dealt with conflict resolution. There is also a focus on Iroquois culture and history.

The Teacher Information background section gives additional information on Aboriginal history and culture. Many lesson plans include downloadable worksheets that can be printed off or transferred to transparencies. The lesson plans are all developed to allow students to be as interactive as possible in the learning process. The title of each lesson reflects the learning objective, making it easy for you to sort through and choose what information you would like to share with your students. A Resources section includes a list of books and materials that you may want to use to increase your own understanding, to supplement lesson concepts, and materials or for students to follow up on their own. Many of the resources are approved by Alberta Education and where possible ISBN and order information is included.
