Welcome to the Aboriginal Origin and Settlement Edukit. This Edukit was developed to allow you discover and explore all kinds of interesting and fun facts about Aboriginal culture in Alberta and across Canada. You will learn about many important Aboriginal communities in Alberta such as Dene, Blackfoot, and Cree communities, as well as the origin and culture of the Métis people.

You will be introduced to the concept of oral history and how it was the primary means in which Aboriginal people shared their history, spirituality, and stories of creation with one another. There is a special focus on the Blood and Peigan Nations of southern Alberta that will allow you to discover why family and community is so important in passing down traditional ways.

Many of the activities will allow you to participate first hand such as researching Aboriginal languages and Aboriginal owned and operated businesses. A mini Cree dictionary will allow you to practice and maybe learn a few words from the Cree language!

Junior High Student Zone, Aboriginal Language and Culture
The Métis are a distinct cultural group with their own special history and language called Michif. Discover the origins of the Michif language and learn how to spell, say and share a new word! Explore our section on Métis history and TidBits to know, and learn more about their language and culture. Enjoy!

Junior High Student Zone, Aboriginal Spirituality and Creation
Welcome to the Spirituality and Creation Stories Edukit. This edukit has been designed to allow you to access all kinds of neat facts about Aboriginal peoples. There is a really interesting section on the medicinal uses of plants and how different Aboriginal groups utilized them. You will get to study up on some of the plants, herbs, berries, and shrubs that grow in Alberta.

Middle East
This Edukit addresses issues of national identity and globalization in the Middle East, specifically as they apply to the example of Israel and the Occupied Territories. The content in this Edukit is designed to do this at a level for secondary students and teachers.

Secondary Student Zone, Aboriginal Health and Wellness
Here is information and visual material to help you develop a more complete understanding of two aspects of social and emotional wellness of native Canadian groups. First, the residential school process was a harsh influence on First Nations culture and family life. This part of Canadian history is particularly important to understand and to try to heal the pervasive effects of this episode.. The second focus for this collection of resources is to clarify the traditional ability of First Nations groups to cooperate, communicate, and meet their needs at a very high level of success.

Senior High Culture and its Meaning, Student
The Culture and Its Meaning Edukit was designed to allow you to examine Aboriginal culture from a historical and contemporary perspective. It is important to recognize that many factors have influenced and affected Aboriginal culture in both positive and negative ways.

Senior High Student Zone, Aboriginal Language and Culture
You will have the opportunity to hypothesize about what potential impacts there could be upon Aboriginal culture if traditional languages were lost. You will also be able to recognize the different Aboriginal language groups and dialects within Alberta and Canada. The Edukit also provides you with some interesting facts about the history and cultural importance of Aboriginal languages in Canada.

For Senior Secondary students; the student zone that follows is a resource for you to find information to supplement your projects or to just learn something new about Aboriginal and Métis people in Canada. The Tid Bits section will provide you with facts about many different Aboriginal organizations in Canada. You can also find out facts about the history and culture of the Métis people in Canada too.

It is important to realize that there is a proper way to go about asking to share in the knowledge that Elders possess. This edukit allows you to explore the role of Elders in the pre-contact, contact, and modern eras. Storytelling is a very spiritual and sacred aspect of Aboriginal culture that you will be given an opportunity to explore.
