It is important to recognize that the Methodists were not the only
agents of cultural exchange in what is now Alberta. Other missionary groups, such as the Anglican
church and the Roman Catholic church, as well as the Hudson's Bay Company,
were all active throughout the missionary era. These groups were
influential participants in the exchange of goods, language, religion and
ideas.
Other religious denominations, communities and groups were generally
akin to the Methodist missions in their goal of "Christianizing," and "civilizing"
Aboriginal people. While stated objectives and priorities may have
differed to some extent, the results were largely the same.
This section includes some of these participants. Learn about the
history of these related groups and the legacy they left behind. Discover
a few of the significant people and events and the role they played in
Alberta's mission era.
