Grant Skinner: Home and Lifestyle

If you use a computer on a regular basis, you may have heard of a program called “Flash.” Most websites use the program to enhance the presentation of information for the user.  However, you may not have heard of a young man named Grant Skinner who invented the program; and yet, if you Google search his name alongside the word ‘flash,’ you will find 116,000 hits or results.

Grant is an Edmonton-based software designer who, at the ripe old age of 25, was named Canada’s best Macromedia Flash developer at the FlashintheCan Design and Technology Festival held in Toronto in April 2005.

Grant’s company, gskinner.com, had only been around for a year when he won that award. The company serves people and corporations all over the world, but is actually quite a small operation with only six employees.

So how did Grant Skinner become an international Flash expert, with teaching and speaking appointments around the world?

Skinner graduated at the top of three classes at the University of Alberta (WeBuilder accredited diploma) and the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (Internet programming certificate and Internet consulting certificate). He started his career as a digital media developer and consultant in 1998, and later became a teacher and curriculum developer in 2001.

In 2003, he was very well known for his invention gModeler, a free online diagramming and documentation tool that won several international awards and was featured in the SIGGRAPH Web Expo of the world’s finest web-graphics work of 2003.

Skinner is now developing a flash program for use with cell phones, to allow instant communication via the internet.
