Approaching Alberta's literary heritage from the
perspective of those who create it reveals exactly how successful,
talented and diverse it is. Writers from Alberta work in every genre
imaginable and come from each corner of the province. There are poets from
the mountains, cowboy poets, historians interested in the northern oil sands, world renowned novelists living in rural houses on the prairie,
publishers in Edmonton and Calgary, and all those working at Alberta's
universities and academic institutions. The scope of the literary arts
varies from those working in non-fiction and factual reporting to those
who work hard to create the make believe.

Many of the names here will be familiar names
caught on the shelves of bookstores, or reading lists at all levels of
education, while others are known primarily within their own field. Some
were born and raised in the province, while many more moved here.
Regardless of their origin, Alberta's writers reflect the influx of talent
found in society at large.
