Events

Visual arts events typically consist of festivals and functions showcasing various arts and can range from small, intimate parties held at local galleries to large festivals with thousands of people attending. Whatever the situation, these types of events are a great way to engage the community to become interested and involved in the visual arts, as well as offering artists and their work much needed exposure.

One of the largest visual arts festivals in Alberta is Edmonton's The Works Street MarketThe Works Art & Design Festival, which has been running since 1985. The Works festival is a tremendous success with over 580 artists displaying to over 250,000 people from all over the world. In Calgary, the 4th Street Lilac Festival has been named Calgary's best "free" festival. It is a one-day festival showcasing Calgary's best art and entertainment.

Not all festivals take place in Calgary or Edmonton. Vegreville's Ukrainian Pysanka Festival is a spirited event that pays tribute to Canada's Ukrainian culture through music, dance and art displays. Visual artists have the opportunity to exhibit and sell their art on the Festival's grounds. With close to 10,000 people attending the Festival annually, it is a great chance for artists to present their work to a large audience.
