Performing Arts - Granting Institutions

It is no secret that performing artist is not the highest paid job in the country. For many, the stereotype of the "starving artist" rings true, with irregular working hours, unstable employment and a paycheck that hangs in the balance of a positive review. Yet, despite these obstacles, thousands of Albertans choose to spend their lives devoted to a particular art, their determination and ambition matched only by extraordinary talent.

As a way of helping, and to ensure the promotion of Canadian culture, many institutions offer grants and scholarships to artists. These monetary supplements are awarded on a basis of financial need and through an application process, making it possible for special performances to be commissioned and artists to continue creating innovative pieces. Many of these institutions are organized through the government. Both the provincial and federal government have branches dealing specifically with performing arts grants. Others are privately distributed and cater to a specific discipline.
