Events
Every year, throughout Alberta, a multitude of events that support,
promote and encourage individuals involved in film, video, television,
web design and animation occur. Creative events such as workshops and
seminars provide artists with experience, skills and offer constructive
feedback. Calgary, Banff and Edmonton, among other Alberta communities,
have developed a series of events that promote the aforementioned
industries and their various forms.
Film
festivals are an excellent way for filmmakers to gain exposure while
audiences are granted access to explore different types of films. Some of
Alberta's film festivals are quite specialized, exploring a particular
type of film by a specific type of artist. For example, the Aboriginal
Film Festival showcases films made by and about Aboriginal peoples,
promoting learning and expression regarding their cultures, while the
Herland
Feminist Film and Video Festival endeavors to respect and embrace
gender differences through film. Other events such as the
Local Heroes
International Screen Festival have a broader mandate. The festival
displays a wide selection of international features and Canadian films and
provides seminars encouraging individuals to critique works and receive
constructive criticism. The $100 Film Festival is another
example of an event that offers an eclectic mix of animation, drama,
comedy and experimental
films.
Television
is a form of new media that many individuals explore everyday. The
Banff
Television Festival recognizes the significance of television as a tool for
learning and informing, and therefore, the festival seeks to promote
and encourage the industry. Geared toward television program makers and
content creators, the Banff Television Festival creates an environment
conducive to making contacts and developing business relationships.
As
animation has recently developed a large following of dedicated artists
and fans, a number of events have emerged to celebrate the medium. The
Animation Show is an event that
features an assortment of some of the best in animated short films and
simultaneously gives the animators greater public exposure. One of the
largest animé festivals in Western Canada is
Animethon, its mandate is to
feature a wide selection of new and classic animé while promoting and
educating
the public about Japanese animation.
