WOMEN’S VOLUNTARY SERVICES

The Women’s Voluntary Service was set up in 1941. The W.V.S. is a division of the Department of National War Services. The nation-wide network provides a sea of female volunteers. These dedicated women aim to ease the strains of war and attempt to make more comfortable the lives of service members at home and, abroad. Volunteer assistance is provided in areas that range from canteen work, to working in magazine depots, to making ditty bags for seamen, to providing child care and even to organizing stamp drives. These are but a few of the vital projects in which the Women’s Voluntary Services engage.

Local W.V.S. centers do not aim to carry out projects themselves, but offer services to existing voluntary organizations. Services offered include transportation, drilling, map reading, first aid, physical training, magazine collection for troops, room registry and salvage collection drives, among others. All services have received enthusiastic responses.
Many other W.V.S. centers offer unique services. One such center has created a recreational work group in a military hospital. Another holds a music library. It even hosts a weekly music hour when music-loving military personnel may listen to their favorite records. Another centre has established child care units for the children of military men. Others offer Red Cross blood drives. A Vancouver based W.V.S. center has even created a price panel survey group.
Under the supervision of trained workers, these centers are open one day per week. This arrangement permits dedicated service wives to take some time off.
