Alberta Theatre Projects (ATP) is a Calgary based not-for-profit organization dedicated to promoting the performing arts through various events, workshops and productions. Established in 1972, by Lucille Wagner and Douglas Riske, the organization was created to promote Canadian plays featuring prairie themes and children's theatre. In the beginning ATP was but a small organization. In fact, for the first 13 years of its existence, performances were held at the Canmore Opera House and Heritage Park in Calgary. Much has changed since its humble beginning; today Alberta Theatre Projects has grown to become one of the largest producers of plays within Canada and the main contemporary theatre company in Calgary.

In 1995, ATP moved into the Martha Cohen Theatre, located in the EPCOR Centre for the Performing Arts in downtown Calgary. The organization has since produced many new plays, launching careers for scores of playwrights.

Each year, through the Enbridge Playrites Festival, ATP produces new plays and offers workshops for individuals aspiring to work in theatre. Full-time staff, seasonal artists, casual workers and volunteers come together to make the festival a success. With a base of over 300 volunteers, these dedicated individuals comprise an important part of the organization. Volunteer positions range from ushering to running the gift shop and helping at special events.

In addition to its other practices, ATP is dedicated to inspiring and helping those who are interested in learning more about theatre. Programs and workshops provide aspiring actors with a sense of community and a venue to share ideas with other individuals interested in performing arts. ATP has composed teachers' guides that may help students study plays such as Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? The Legacy program (Lifelong Education and Growth for Artists, Community and Youth) offers up to 19 programs that include mentorship, script development, apprenticeships and workshop opportunities. Grade 12 students have an opportunity to join the Junior Apprentice Program which offers an eight or nine month position in a particular theatre concentration including: technical/production, stage management, resource development/ fundraising or play development.
