Alberta Dance Explosions Festival
Held over a course of three weekends, the Alberta Dance Explosions
Festival showcases a wide selection of talent. The
festival is held in Calgary and aims to display various forms of dance
creation and promote the development of a choreography community.
Choreographers wishing to enter the festival must undergo an audition
process which involves submitting an application and proving that their
work has been displayed to the public in the past.
The opening weekend of the festival features presentations choreographed
by established dance creators. Artists participating in this portion of
the festival may present their work and act as mentors who provide
information on the choreography process. The dance creators are also
required to participate in specialized workshops which focus on the
process of creation. Anyone with an interest in dance and choreography may
join the workshops, while festival participants may be admitted free of
charge.
In 1996, the University
of Calgary began to offer a Bachelor of Arts in Dance degree, and
since that time, there has been an increase in aspiring choreographers.
Many types of dance are represented at the festival each year, including
an eclectic mixture of ballet, jazz, ethnic movement and contemporary
dance.
