The Markin-Flanagan Distinguished Writers Programme

University of Calgary

University of Calgary grads.The University of Calgary has been involved in promoting the literary arts through programs and workshops since the 1970s. W.O Mitchell, Rudy Wiebe, and Aritha van Herk are examples of well known authors who participated in creative writing courses and later became instructors at the University.

The first Canadian doctorate program in creative writing was created by the University of Calgary in the mid-1990s. Currently, it offers excellent programs such as the bachelor of arts in English literature which promotes intellectual, creative and personal growth through the study of various forms of literature. Through this program of study, students have the option of taking a creative writing or comparative literature concentration.
