University of Calgary
The University of Calgary has been involved in promoting the literary arts through
programs and workshops since the 1970s. W.O Mitchell, Rudy Wiebe, and Aritha van
Herk are examples of well known authors who participated in creative writing
courses and later became instructors at the University.
The first Canadian doctorate program in creative writing was created by the
University of Calgary in the mid-1990s. Currently, it offers excellent
programs such as the bachelor of arts in English literature which promotes
intellectual, creative and personal growth through the study of various forms of
literature. Through this program of study, students have the option of taking a
creative writing or comparative literature concentration.
