Alberta's Real Estate History

Transition of Edmonton

Alberta’s real estate history, like the history of the province itself, is a short history, but a fast-paced one. In little more than a hundred years, Alberta’s real estate industry went from being populated by a handful of speculating adventurers and rich developers, to being populated by licensed professionals and multi-national corporations involved in real estate sales, property management, land development, mortgage banking, and real estate appraisal. The transformation of the real estate industry can be seen today in the vast suburbs and towering downtown cores of Alberta’s modern cities. The history of real estate is alive, in preserved historical buildings like Calgary’s Palliser Hotel and Edmonton’s Hotel Macdonald, and in historical replicas of Fort Edmonton and Fort Calgary.

Divided chronologically, the History section affords readers an in-depth look at the real estate industry in Alberta — from early settlement (see Alberta: How the West Was Young) in Alberta through the events of the First World War, the Great Depression, the Second World War, and the postwar era (see Alberta: Home, Home on the Plains, WW2: The Homefront in Alberta, and Wings Over Alberta).
