Books on a variety of topics are published yearly for a national and international audience. Content within the books relates to Western Canada, history, literary criticism, classics, political science, native studies, Middle East studies, Slavic studies, natural history, and language. In 1975, a full-time executive editor was appointed and in 1977, a director was added.

The Holocaust's Ghost. The University of Alberta Press  (U of A Press) strives to publish quality books and this is reflected in the numerous awards credited to various publications. For eight consecutive years, the Writer's Guild of Alberta award and a Book Publisher's Association of Alberta Book award were presented to U of A Press books. In 2001, the U of A Press book entitled, The Holocaust's Ghost: Writings on Art, Politics, Law, and Education was awarded with the Best Scholarly Book award. The book addresses the important issue of social injustice while including a creative display of art to illustrate the impact of the Holocaust.A Painter's Year in the Forests of Bhutan.

A Painter's Year in the Forests of Bhutan was awarded with the Best Book on Mountain Culture award at the Banff Mountain Book Festival. Impressed by Dr. Andreas Kare Hellum's original look at the little-known culture of Bhutan, judges of the festival formulated a new category to suit the unique nature of the book.
