On Spec Magazine
Established in 1989, On Spec is an Edmonton-based magazine, specializing in the
publication of speculative fiction (science fiction, fantasy and horror stories). The
publication was conceptualized by a small group of Edmonton writers who
desired to
contribute to the speculative fiction community.
Initially, the magazine sought to publish mostly Canadian work, but has since expanded
its guidelines to include writing from authors all over the world. Material found within
On Spec includes original and unpublished speculative fiction and poetry. While the
focus remains on publishing short stories and poetry, relevant artwork, commissioned
non-fiction articles and reviews are sometimes run.
The success of
On Spec is due in large part to the commitment of the writers and
editorial staff. Diane Walton, Jena Snyder and Barry Hammond are founders
of the magazine who remain incredibly involved with the publication. In
addition, dedicated volunteers assist in the operation of the magazine and
funding is provided by the Canada Council for the Arts and the Alberta
Foundation for the Arts.
Also contributing to the success of the magazine are many loyal subscribers who request the
magazine year after year.
