Audrey's Books
The history of Audrey's Books is inextricably linked to Mel Hurtig,
a political activist, writer and publisher. His first
bookstore, Edmonton's Hurtig Books, was opened in 1956 and enjoyed a great deal of success
until he sold the store in an attempt to focus attention on publishing,
less than two decades later,
It was 1972 when Audrey's Books evolved from Hurtig's bookstore. Named after its new
owner, Audrey Whaley (who learned the craft of book-selling from Hurtig himself), Audrey's
has thrived, selling a wide range of books.
Over the years, Audrey's Books has hosted many events supporting the literary community,
including author readings and the current book club that invites readers from the community
to come together and discuss the printed word.
