Professional Associations

Professional associations are organized within the arts community to provide various forms of assistance to artists. Given the difficulty many artists experience in obtaining the necessary resources to pursue their work full-time, many turn to professional associations for much needed support.

In Alberta, nearly every discipline of visual arts is represented by a professional association. For hand weavers, there is the Hand Weavers, Spinners & Dyers of Alberta, for crafters, there is the Alberta Craft Council and for photographers, there is the Alberta Professional Photographers Association. There are also more broadly based associations that encompass all forms of visual arts in Alberta, such as the Alberta Foundation for the Arts (AFA) and the Alberta Society of Artists (ASA).

The support a professional association provides is vital to the success of the artists in Alberta. The assistance often comes in the form of lobbying, marketing, financial assistance and networking. This aid allows artists to focus on creating their art instead of concentrating on other concerns.
