Granting Institutions
Alberta artists in need of money can apply for funding through various private and government grants established to promote the
province's art. These funds are used to further the development of art in
the province through funding particular projects or subsidizing
professional development costs.
Every year, many artists and organizations apply for
funding and the need always exceeds the resources available. The
Alberta Foundation for the Arts (AFA), for
example, receives 2,000 applications annually and approximately 1,200 of
those applicants receive funding. The AFA's budget is around $16
million and is determined by the Alberta government through the Alberta
lottery fund.
The Government of Canada also contributes to funding the arts in Alberta. The federal government recognizes the
challenges artists face in creating and the significance of their
endeavours to Canadians. In an attempt to support art and address the needs of artists, the
government has created multiple opportunities to obtain funding.

To receive funding, artists and organizations must
prove their need. This is usually done through an application process and
evaluated by a jury. The awarding of grants is based on the applicant's
artistic merit and financial need.
