New Media Arts

Death's HandNew media art can be defined as any creative piece that is constructed digitally. This includes video, audio and images that are transmitted via computer animation, computer games and website design and development. Those employed in this industry are often graduates of technical institutions, rather than art schools or programs. These individuals fill the roles of programmers, designers and company builders. The titles are not normally associated with artists, yet there is an essential creative element in each of them.

Tiger ShenThe creation of computer and console video games is a booming industry which employs hundreds of animators, writers and graphic artists across the province. Bioware, one of Canada's most successful new media companies, has been producing award-winning software since 1996. Based out of Edmonton, the company specializes in first-person role playing games such as Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.

Organizations such as Alberta New Media Association and EMMedia have been built to give recognition and support to those involved in this fast-paced and ever-changing industry.
