Animation
Animation
comes to us in the common form of a major motion picture. Most Albertan's
grow up with popular Disney films and Saturday morning cartoons, most of
which are not locally produced. There is, however, a smaller-scale
animation community in the province that regularly produces innovative
pieces.
More and more, the realm of animation is being transferred from the hand
of the visual artist into the hard drive of a computer programmer. New
media art encompasses many forms of animation, but the original art still
has a place in Alberta.
Local animators have been submitting work to film festivals alongside live action
filmmakers since their inception. Calgary's Quickdraw Animation Society
brings these artists together in an
effort to combine their talents and resources. They offer courses and sponsor
events throughout the year.
Animators such as Colin Low, who is profiled on this website, are leading
the way in a small, but successful Alberta industry. Educational
institutions such as the Banff Centre
now offer a diverse set of courses for the aspiring animator.
