Alberta Film

Established in July of 2002, Alberta Film was born out of a provincial need to increase film and video production funding. The organization's mandate is to provide information and a variety of services to individuals involved in the film industry.

In recent years, there has been a dramatic increase in the amount of directors, actors and technicians working in Alberta, due in part to an increase in funding. In September of 2001, a report composed by an Alberta Film Review Committee identified the need for the increase of film and video production funding and the development of a common office. The goal of this proposal was accomplished when Alberta Film was developed in 2002. Alberta Film grants assistance to local, national and international filmmakers through the amalgamation of two provincial departments: Alberta Economic Development and Alberta Community Development.

Alberta FilmThe Alberta Film Commission (AFC) and the Film Development Office work within Alberta Film to promote the film industry. Located together, the Alberta Film Commission and the Film Development Office work closely in order to pool their resources. The Film Development Office reports to Alberta Community Development and helps companies, individuals and organizations in the film industry by offering consultations and skill development workshops. By working with other provinces and the federal government, the Film Development Office helps to operate Canadian pavilions at international markets. Another way that the office promotes film is through the Alberta Foundation for the Art's Alberta Film Development Program which allocates funding for Alberta production companies.

Reporting to Alberta Economic Development, the AFC has been in operation since 1972. Through a myriad of resources, the AFC helps to demonstrate the fact that Alberta is a prime filming location. By working closely with both the Edmonton and Calgary film commissions, the Alberta Film Commission aims to endorse film production within the province. Along with advertising Alberta as a prime film location, the AFC provides filmmakers with location information and aids in film preparation by acting as a mediator between producers and facilities, services, government and businesses. Producers looking for the ideal set location may find information through the Alberta Film Location Services.
