Alberta Motion Pictures Industries Association
Alberta's film history harkens back to the silent film era of the early
20th century. Even then, movies were being filmed in Alberta
locations. Since that time, the
Alberta film industry has grown
substantially; writers, actors and filmmakers coming together with the
desire to reflect Canadian ideals, identities and thoughts onscreen.
The Alberta Motion Pictures Industry Association (AMPIA)
helps film professionals to market their products, find funding
and gain the knowledge necessary to persevere in the industry. In 1973,
the AMPIA became the first organization of its kind in Canada, acting as a
means of ensuring the Alberta motion picture industry is an asset to the
province both economically and culturally.
The AMPIA hosts events such as workshops, providing an
opportunity for networking and the dispersal of film industry information.
In 2002, along with
Women in Film and Television, the AMPIA presented a
series of workshops and seminars called 'the Business of Entertainment'.
Through this program, participants learn about auditing, film financing,
tax incentives and other financial aspects of filmmaking.
The AMPIA awards are offered yearly in a variety of
categories such as 'Best Cinematography', 'Best Series' and 'Best Adapted
Screenplay'. Each year, the awards celebration acknowledges the talent and
effort of Alberta filmmakers.
