EMMedia Gallery and Production Society
The EMMedia Gallery and Production Society is a Calgary centre
specializing in new media arts resources, production and programming.
Through a variety of programs, resources and facilities EMMedia endeavours
to promote and support the new media arts industry.
The history of the
association dates back to 1979 when a group of artists affiliated with the
Alberta College of Art came together to
establish the Centre Art Video. By October 18, 1983, the Centre Art Video
incorporated as EMMedia Gallery and Production Society under the Societies
Act of Alberta.
Over the years, EMMedia has offered many programs,
workshops and scholarships. In 1994, EMMedia created the annual Bars n'
Tones Award' which provides assistance to producers on an independent
video production both technically and financially. Another interesting
program was Digital Direct: the Pilot Project' developed in November
1998. As a mobile digital video system, Digital Direct' familiarizes
students with the various stages of video production.
In May of 2002, EMMedia created its first live web camera
project entitled Location, Location, Location. Inter-disciplinary artists
Valerie LeBlanc and Daniel Dugas were the organizers behind the unique
wireless web cam project that travelled across the country. EMMedia in
Calgary and the 'E-lounge' conference facility at the University of Moncton
served as stationary communication points, while the wireless web cam
travelled to different areas, allowing participants the opportunity to
speak about the beneficial cultural characteristics of particular urban
locations. Location, Location, Location is an example of an EMMedia
project that involves new technology in order to connect individuals and
facilitate communication.
Since its inception, EMMedia has developed multiple programs and workshops, providing distinctive possibilities
for artists working in new media. The organization is committed to
enhancing the culture in the Alberta community and provides artists with
the appropriate tools necessary to work on their projects. EMMedia's 2,400
square foot facility houses video production and post-production equipment
and is available to assist individuals with the development of
independent productions. Their screening room is used for workshops,
rehearsals, productions and installations.
