Telefilm
A federal cultural agency, Telefilm is dedicated to supporting the
Canadian film, television, new media and music industries by providing
funding. Works such as feature films, drama series and documentaries are a
reflection of Canadian culture and society and thus, their creation fall
under the mandate of the organization.
Telefilm's history dates back to 1967 when the
Government of Canada allocated funding towards the newly developed
Canadian Film Development Corporation (CFDC), created as a means to
support the Canadian feature film industry. By 1984, CRDC was renamed
Telefilm Canada, a name that acted as a better reflection of its broad
range of television and film activities. Through the years, Telefilm has
offered a variety of programs which help support many different types of
artists. The Canada Film Fund, the Canadian Television Fund, the Canadian
New Media Fund, and the Canada Music Fund are a few of the key sources of
funding available through Telefilm.
Although Telefilm is a national organization, it serves
Canadians artists from all provinces. Numerous Albertan artists have
reaped the benefits of Telefilm funding, producing socially and culturally
relevant works. Ann Wheeler, an Albertan filmmaker whose award-winning
features, television programs and documentaries are well known across
Canada, is one of many who have received funding from Telefilm.
