Alberta College of Art and Design
Calgary's Alberta College of Art and Design (ACAD) is one of only four
degree-granting, publicly funded art and design colleges in Canada. Founded in
1926, it was originally a part of the Provincial Institute of Art and Technology
(now SAIT). Then known as the Alberta College of Art, it became a separate
institution in 1985. 10 years later, the school was granted degree accreditation
and the name was changed to its present form.
More than 1,000 full-time students attend the college, with nearly 700 more
enrolled in the credit and non-credit continuing education classes. Two degree
programs are offered: a bachelor of fine arts or a bachelor of design. Through
these programs, students are able to specialize in their chosen field.
Classes
are offered in liberal studies, fine arts, design, new media and digital
technology.
The new media and digital technology faculty is the newest at the college and
includes courses in digital video and audio, website design and animation. The
program has a fine arts emphasis with the incorporation of technological and
theoretical skills in a digital environment. Projects include all forms of new
media art including video production, digital images, 2D drawing as it relates
to the Internet, 3D modeling and digital printmaking.
