Animéthon
Edmonton's annual
Animéthon was first established in 1993. Its mandate is to
promote the popularity and create awareness of Japanese animation to the greater
public. Animé, the Japanese word for an animated television show or feature, is a
form of animation that has grown in popularity exponentially throughout North
America in the past 10 years.
Animéthon is the largest animé festival held in western Canada and attracts
upwards of 3,000 participants each year. The event, held at Edmonton's Grant
MacEwan College, includes a variety of activities over the course of two days.
While panel discussions are held, an artist's gallery allows for local artists
to showcase their work. A vendor's room is available for all manners of
merchandise to be sold and a costume competition and showing is held.
Each year at the festival, nearly 200 hours of animé film is shown. Works
showcased include classics and fan favourites, as well as new material.
Everything from children's films to horror, romance and action/adventure is
screened throughout the festival.
In the past, the convention has included film screenings at the Stanley Milner
Library, an animé improvisation session and an animé music video contest.
