Banff Television Festival

Banff TV festival logoSince its inception in 1979, the Banff Television Festival has grown to become one of the most anticipated television festivals on the international circuit. Showcasing a mix of features from around the world, Canadian productions, celebrities, industry leaders and content creators flock to Alberta's mountain town each summer.

On average, approximately 1,800 participants attend each year and are able to register for various sessions, seminars, classes, pitching and networking opportunities. Those with scripts and ideas are able to approach producers, directors and actors in an effort to sell their stories. Established pitching sessions include, 'CTV Canadian Documart: The World's Richest Pitch and New Players Pitch', where fiction, documentary and children's film ideas are discussed.

In stark contrast with the deal-making and business side of the festival, its mandate has always been to "recognize, celebrate and encourage excellence in television programming within Canada and around the world." Upholding this commitment, submissions from around the world compete in the Banff Rockie Awards, in a bid to win more than $100,000 in prizes. There are 15 program categories which include animation, arts documentaries, children's programs, continuing series and sports programs. There are two major cash prizes; the NHK President's Prize awards $25,000 to the best HDTV entry and the Global Television Grand Prize hands out $50,000 to the best program entry.
