Roland W. Lines: "A Legacy of Just Ten Years Work."

The buildings of Hardie and Martland

In 1912, architects David Hardie and John Martland teamed up to form Hardie and Martland - "building designers and structural engineers." During their three-year partnership, they designed such masterpieces as the Hecla Block, the Hilltop House, and Sacred Heart Church.

The Legacy of Magoon and MacDonald

Herbert Alton Magoon and George Heath MacDonald as Magoon and MacDonald, Architects, were partners in one of the best-known Edmonton architectural firms during the city's first real estate boom. They designed many landmark buildings such as the Salvation Army Citadel, the Gem Theatre, and the Robertson Church.

Architects are not members of real estate organizations. They have their own professional organizations such as the Alberta Association of Architects. Nevertheless, architects play a significant role in the shaping of real estate by designing its buildings and landscapes. The following biographies are of architects, some native Albertans and some not, whose designs, whether neo-classical, modern, or post-modern, have left a lasting impression on Alberta's built landscape. Alberta's real estate has been enriched not only through original designs, but through the efforts of architects to restore and adapt the province's precious stock of historic buildings.
