The Battle of Passchendaele during World War I is officially known as the third battle of Ypres. Ypres is a small town in Belgium, situated just over the border from France. The battle occurred between July and November of 1917. Soldiers endured terrible conditions. Heavy rains turned the battlefield into a muddy swamp, and they endured attacks using mustard gas. Alex Decoteau  was killed by a sniper’s bullet on October 30, just days before the offensive ended. British and Canadian forces finally took the village of Passchendaele on November 6, 1917.
