Participation in the activities of the church took on an
accentuated role for French-Canadian settlers. Not only had the
clergy played a large role in their coming to the West and the
initial community building, the church and the activities
surrounding it were often considered the most significant places
in any given community.
or the French-Canadians, the Catholic Church was the
principal player, but there were also francophone Protestants,
such as the Duclos settlement near Bonnyville. This section
includes a brief overview of the various religious orders that
came to Alberta, established parishes, and built major
institutions such as schools and hospitals.
