A post office opened here in June 1905 and was named for Alexia Westhead née Marryat, an early area rancher who was related to Irene Marryat Parlby. The Westheads, Parlbys, and Marryats all ranched in the area. Alix was also a stop on the CPR line, track to which was completed in September 1905. The community was large enough to be established as a village in 1907.
