Chipewyan Reserves

In 1899, some time after treaties were Signed by the Plains Cree and the Blackfoot Confederacy, the Chipewyan signed Treaty Eight along with the Dunne-za, Dene Tha and some northern Cree (Dempsey, p. 69). Resulting Chipewyan reserves are found at Fort McMurray, Fort Chipewyan, and near Anzac. The latter, known as the Janvier Reserve is also referred to locally as Chipewyan Prairie (GNCA, p. 119).

Also some Chipewyan's signed Treaty Six. Cold Lake Indian Reserve # 149 was established in 1904 and expanded in 1909 and 1911. Chief Kin-oo-say-oo, from what is now known as the Cold Lake First Nations Band, is reported to have signed Treaty Six on behalf of southern Chipewyan's in 1876 (GNCA, p. 95). People at Heart Lake Indian Reserve # 167, northeast of Lac La Biche, are said to be related to this band.
