Alberta Challenge

The Syncrude Oil Sands near Fort McMurray, Alberta. Brought to Alberta schools by the Friends of Geographical Names of Alberta Society in partnership with the Geographical Names of Alberta, the Alberta Challenge is a ground-breaking initiative that raises awareness of geographical names and the democratic process.

The Challenge is aimed at students from Kindergarten to Grade 12 in hopes of creating feelings of pride and belonging in schools, no matter the age of the student.

Challenged to "re-name" their school, students will work together as "parliaments" to propose, elect and vote new names of areas of their school. Working together as one group to reach a decision and an agreement, will in end, reduce bullying and help develop the community feeling of schools.

Also, the Challenge is available to all schools in Alberta and participation in the Challenge will be throughout the 2008-2009 school year. Teachers will be given a resource package with instructions and handouts for the students.

Based on the new social studies curriculum, the Challenge directly focuses and centers on the new objectives. Building on values and developing skills, the Challenge is a very educational, innovative and inventive activity that works in conjunction with the developing curriculum through all the levels of schooling.
