The task of the Government of Alberta is to work on behalf of the people of the province to perform day-to-day administration. Part of this task involves the guidance and regulation of different elements of the economy, among them the voluntary sector.

The voluntary sector plays a key role in Alberta, identifying people or causes needing help and taking steps to assist them. As volunteer and non-profit organizations function to improve the quality of life of Albertans, the provincial government has a vested interest in ensuring that such organizations are able to be successful. Accordingly, the government regulates the operation of charitable organizations in the province through legislation such as the Charitable Fund-raising Act. It also works in partnership with volunteer and non-profit organizations, in order to develop an environment that ensures they are able to continue to provide services that benefit the public.

Alberta Community Development is the ministry that links the voluntary sector to the provincial government. It acts as a liaison between the two, helping to foster the smooth operation of charitable and non-profit organizations and encouraging public initiative and philanthropy. In this way, the Government of Alberta plays a key role in making sure that the spirit of volunteerism in the province remains strong.
