The village was incorporated 3 September 1901. Mr. S.W. Gebo came to Alberta in 1900 looking for coal property and found some choice land around this site. In 1901, he sent for a Mr. A.L. Frank in Butte, Montana, and together they formed the Canadian American Company, which started immediately to develop the coal deposits. The grand opening of the town occurred 10 September 1901. By 1903, the town of Frank was well built up. A tremendous rock slide crashed down from Turtle Mountain 29 April 1903. This slide destroyed part of the town and took seventy lives.
