Akenside

Category : Locality

The Canadian Pacific Railway established a station here in 1950 and named it after Sir James Aikins (1851-1929), lieutenant-governor of Manitoba from 1916 through 1926. Aikins was born in Peel County, Ontario, the son of the Honourable James Cox Aikins. He practiced law in Winnipeg, and from 1881 until 1911, he was the western solicitor for the C.P.R. It is not known why the spelling of Aikins' name was changed when the locality was established.

Approximately 19 km north-east of Edmonton.
