Abraham Lake

Category : Lake

The name for this lake was chosen from 2000 entries submitted by Alberta students in Grades 1-9 to a contest conducted by the Department of Environmental Affairs in 1972. Proposed by Karen Schauerte (Grade 9-Alder Flats) and Jake Jameson (Grade 4-Caroline), the name Abraham Lake perpetuates the memories of Silas Abraham and other members of his family. They were Stoney Indians who often hunted and trapped in this area. An Indian burial ground containing graves of Abraham's family was flooded by the man-made lake caused by the Bighorn Dam. The graveyard was moved.

Approximately 24 km south-west of Nordegg.
