So, This Is Alberta!
The Heritage Community Foundation, with the generous financial support of the Community Initiatives Program,
is pleased to present this very special multimedia project in celebration of Alberta's 100th year as a province of Canada.
So, This Is Alberta! is a unique website, featuring the designs and illustrations of Alberta's own Gary
Delainey and Gerry Rasmussen (writers and illustrators of the comics Bub Slug and Betty). The website draws its
inspiration from Delainey and Rasmussen's book, So This Is Canada! and follows the comic adventures of a raven and a Richardson's ground squirrel (don't call him "gopher") as they
encounter the artifacts of Alberta's past and present. Visitors to the site can also enjoy a multimedia journey through the rich
natural, cultural, and social history of the province of Alberta. Through text, photographs, video segments, audio files, and
more, the rich heritage of this province is traced in four main sections:
-
Natural Heritage: You will find out about the natural environment from the grasslands to the Boreal Forest,
the foothills, and the mountains. The rich beauty of the province as well as the resources will be explored here.
-
History: Dig around in this section to uncover the fascinating history of the province from the earliest
times. Explore the fur trade, the coming of the railroad, migration and settlement, the creation of the province, the World
Wars, the Depression, the discovery of oil, and much more.
-
Society and Culture: Get a bird's eye view of Alberta's human story in this section of the website. Find
out about the diverse peoples who make up Alberta's population. Discover the political history of this province from before 1905 to
the present day. Learn about Alberta's vibrant arts and culture scene, and check out some of Alberta's many museums, archives
and historic sites. If you're a sports fan, don't forget to look up our features on Alberta's athletes and sports teams.
-
Innovation:
Education, invention, industry, science and technology take centre stage in this section of the
website. Alberta's great and inventive minds can be found here, as well as some inventions that came out of the Wild Rose Province.
Learn about the ongoing education and research that keeps Alberta
progressing.
So, This Is Alberta! Celebrate the
centennial with this special look at the province that sits second
from the left on the Canadian map!
