The performing arts in Alberta cover a wide range of artistic expressions, from dramatic theatre productions
and blues jam sessions to symphony orchestras and dance, which all contribute to the richness of the arts in
Alberta.
Albertans have embraced every genre of music. Jazz, blues, classical,
country, rock and folk have each found their niche in a sprawling and massive
music community. Artists
like Adam Gregory, Tommy Banks, the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, Ian Tyson,
Oscar Lopez, Corb Lund, the Trincan Steel Band, to name a few, have found both dedicated local fan bases and
international recognition for their work, as well as a staying power resulting
from an audience loyal to homegrown talent.
The two major arts centres in the province, Edmonton and Calgary,
both support a
close-knit and widely active theatre district. World renowned events such as the
fringe festivals in Edmonton and Calgary attract local and international acts,
creating an accessible forum for audiences to experience a wide array of
theatrical productions. Smaller centres in Alberta have also encouraged local
theatre groups, like High River's Windmill Theatre
Players, Cochrane's Vision Theatre Players Guild, or
Stony Plain's Multi Youth Productions, just to name a
few. Albertans continue to create award-winning productions,
maintaining one of the most thriving and dynamic theatre scenes in Canada.
