The Calgary-Edmonton
sports rivalry has been going strong since the late
19th century, when
newly formed city rugby teams competed against each
other. Edmonton won the first Alberta Rugby
Football title in 1895. The 1908 Championship included
the Calgary Canucks and the Edmonton Esquimaux, with
Edmonton winning. The Edmonton team adopted the name
“Eskimos” in 1910.
The Western Canada Rugby Football
Union came into being in 1911, with Calgary’s team
winning the championship in the first two years.
Edmonton won the championship in 1913, before the First World War
halted football activities until 1919. The Eskimos were
the first western team to play for the Grey Cup in 1921,
won by the Toronto Argonauts. The Edmonton team returned
in 1922, but came home empty handed once again as Queens University
won the Grey Cup.
After their defeat to Calgary in 1923
the Edmonton Eskimos ceased operations. In Calgary the
50th Battalion team was formed in 1924 supported by the
military organization that was its namesake. The team
took the Alberta title and won the Western Final against
Winnipeg.
In 1928, the Edmonton Eskimos and the
Calgary Tigers were reorganized, and the Eskimos won the
Alberta Rugby championship.
The Edmonton Boosters took to the
field in 1930 wearing blue and white uniforms and from
1931 to 1934 the Calgary Altomahs played. The Calgary
Bronks were formed in 1935 and participated in the
Western Inter-Provincial Football Union. Calgary won the
1938 championship.
