The trapline is the foundation of traditional trapping practices.

Trapline land is formally leased from federal and provincial authorities and can vary in length from forty to sixty kilometres along the natural countours of rivers and lakes. Trappers blaze overland trails through the bush to points along the trapline.
Until recently, when dog-teams and walking were the only means of travel, small, overnight trapline cabins were put up every twenty kilometres, the distance that could be traveled in one day.
