1947: Oil
Strike!
Dry holes, otherwise known as Dusters, were plaguing the petroleum industry in
the 1940s. The
exploration for oil and natural gas had been going on for over 30 years without
stumbling upon a vast source of energy. Around this time, Imperial Oil decided
to proceed with its exploration program in an effort to find oil that might be
trapped in the Western Canadian Basin. In 1946, Imperial Oil initiated a
reconnaissance seismic survey in the Edmonton area.
