As winter turns to spring, traditional hunters and trappers rely on many pieces of equipment and supplies to pursue their subsistence lifestyle. Some of these items are purchased, rather than handmade.

As ice breaks up in spring, families pack equipment and supplies on toboggans, and together with their teams of five to seven dogs, leave home base to take advantage of early fish and muskrat stock.
Standard equipment includes toboggans pulled by dog teams or snowmobiles, Chipewyan skiffs, and rat canoes. Other equipment and supplies include wood burning tin stoves, utensils, backpacks, nets, guns, steel traps, and snares. Purchased food staples often include sugar, salt, lard, rice, flour, and baking powder for making bannock.
