Alberta's Scientific Heroes

Andrew Briosi

Andrew Briosi spent most of his lifetime in the farm community, first as a sheep rancher and later as an irrigation farmer. Among his many well-known practical farm inventions is the sugar beet harvester and beet lifter.  The Lifter Wheels for Beet Harvesters, designed by Andy Briosi in the 1940s, were still being used on every machine built in the 1980s by Kirchner Machine Ltd.

Andy Briosi invented several machines for mechanizing beet harvesting, a time-consuming process traditionally done by hand. For his outstanding work on farm and sugar beet machinery, Andrew Briosi was named a member of the Order of Canada in 1975, and in 1976 was listed in "Who's Who in Alberta" in recognition of his dedication to agriculture in Alberta.

Throughout his lifetime, he was active in both agricultural organizations and community groups. He was inducted into the Alberta Agriculture Hall of Fame the day before he died in 1982.
